Abstract

The paper is devoted to a critical analysis of the classical definition of knowledge, the confirmable true belief (JTB), based on the Gettier problem. Three formally related models of knowledge are considered and it is shown that their conditions are insufficient for the determination of propositional knowledge. The analysis of epistemological cases shows that it is possible for a proposition to be true, for a subject to believe it and have a confirmable belief in it, but nevertheless knowledge is not fixed. In addition, a semantic analysis of possible worlds is presented using the Kripke model, through which it is shown that in Gettier-type cases, truth coincides with belief by chance in a world that is considered epistemically accessible. The conclusion is that the JTB model fails to provide a sufficient criterion of knowledge and requires substantial revision.
