On Some Proto-Kartvelian Lexemes

Abstract

The paper discusses lexical units denoting the parts of a mountain and a rock like კონცხი “cape”, წვერო “peak”, ზეგანი “plateau”, კინწრუხა “summit”, ქიმი “ridge”, ნაპრალი “crevice”, ცხვირი “crest”, შტო “branch”, გოხი “boulder”, კალთა “flank”, ფიქალი “slate”, კინკრიხო “apex”, ცერი “cliff”. Lexemes denoting the parts of a mountain and a rock having Proto-Kartvelian roots have been analyzed, e.g., Pr. Kartv. *კონცხ "climb a peak, a peak" → Geo. კონცხი “cape”: Zan. კინჩხ-ი || კჷნჩხ-ი ← კონჩხ-ი: Svan. კ რჩხ- || კ რჩხ || კორჩხ- (←*კონჩხ-); Pr. Kartv. *კონწ- "peak, ridge" → Geo. კონწ-უ-ხ-ი || კუნწ-უ-ხ-ი, კუნწ-ი, კუნწულ-ი, კენწ-ერ-ო ← *კონწ-ერ-ო: Zan. კვინჭ-ჷ-ხ-ე ← *კონჭ-უხ-ე, კუჭ-ან-ი ← *კონჭ-ან-ი; In Georgian, we have ცერ – ცერ-ი that in Megrelian is ჩანჯ – (ჩან – ჩანჯ-ი კით-ი (ჩან-ი – კით-ი / ჩან – კით-ი), and in Svan it corresponds to ჩერ – ჩერ –შდ-ოლ (Upper Balian), ჩერ – შტ-ოლ (Lashkhian). The archetype *ცერ for the period of GeorgianZan unity has been restored. The lexical units that have equivalents in the Kartvelian languages are also discussed. An analysis of the nouns obtained by motivation is also presented.
