On the Morphemes შიგა, შიდა

Abstract

The paper analyzes the cases of parallel use of lexical units formed by the synonymous pairs შიგა and შიდა in modern Georgian that are commonly used in the language of radio-television and press, as well as in dictionaries of various fields, e.g., შიგასაუნივერსიტეტო "internal affairs of university", cf.: შიდასაუნივერსიტეტო; შიგაგაყვანილობა "internal wiring", cf.: შიდაგაყვანილობა; შიგაწვა "internal combustion", cf.: შიდაწვა. The cases of use of the above-mentioned lexical units with the morphemes (შიგა and შიდა) in the modern Georgian language are discussed and statistical data analysis is given, according to which it is clear that the lexical units with the morpheme შიდა prevail over the lexical units with the morpheme შიგა. The paper also suggests how the lexical units containing the morphemes შიგა and შიდა should be considered in the new orthographic dictionary.
